I never imagined I’d speak publicly this year. It wasn’t on my 2022 mood board. It hasn’t been a goal of mine. And, honestly, it’s something I never foresaw myself doing.
If you’re subscribed to The Scratching Post, my weekly newsletter, you’ll know how transformative this experience was for me.
Speaking in front of an audience and sharing knowledge might not seem like a big deal to some people. But it was a big deal to me, and something well outside of my comfort zone.
As I spoke about in my email, I knew it was something I had to do for my business and to help the women I was speaking to. As I always say when things scare me, I wasn’t going to not do it. It was too good an opportunity and privilege.
So, I set about creating the best copywriting for wedding and event pro presentations I could. Honestly, if you need reminding about how knowledgeable you are, a presentation will do it. And at 11am on Wednesday, I went live and spoke to a handful (I’m not sure of the exact headcount) of lovely women about writing copy for their wedding and event businesses.
It was scary, fulfilling, and in the end, one of the best things I’ve done for my business.
Getting outside your comfort zone as a business owner
Getting outside my comfort zone isn’t a regular occurrence in a business I’ve built for myself and am able to work from home every day. I knew it was something I needed to do more of for my personal and professional growth, and the Ambience Venue Stylings conference was the perfect opportunity.
This was my first time speaking to a live audience, so I’m not quite equipped with speaking tips and confidence-boosting how-tos. But what I can say is how incredible it felt doing something for myself and my business, and the adrenaline I felt after it. And that’s why I’m writing this post. I want to encourage you, as a fellow business owner, to do something you’ve been putting off, shying away from, or are worried about doing.
Take action to elevate & improve your brand and business
If you know you need great photographs to elevate your brand → it’s time to book a professional photoshoot.
If you know investing in your website is what’s going to allow you to level up and book dream clients with confidence → reach out to that wedding copywriter and website designer you’ve secretly been stalking.
If you know public speaking will increase your reach and improve your self-belief → reach out to podcast hosts and conferences. Say YES when lovely business owners approach you to speak at their events!
Whether it’s an investment or activity, these un-comfy things are what will help you grow. The ROI might be confidence and brand awareness (like my talk). Or, your return might be monetary (a great website means better conversion). Either way, I promise the growth is worth it and necessary to become the business owner you want to be.
Oh, and I just wanted to say thank you for supporting Copycat Studios, reading this slightly more emosh blog, and letting me share my love of website copywriting with the world—you’re the best.
