Many of my past clients come to me saying they’ve tried to put their wedding copywriter hat on and write their copy themselves. But after staring at a blank Google doc and struggling to remember their own name, they realise wedding copywriting might not be in their skill set.
And it got me thinking, is there a way I can help wedding businesses decide whether they need a wedding copywriter or not? A few points that would give them insight into the work behind wedding copywriting, so they can determine whether they can do it themselves— and that’s exactly what this blog post is!
Are you willing to put the work & research into crafting your website copy?
Copy requires a lot of work and research. Copy it isn’t just putting words on the page.
You’ll need to dedicate time to diving deep into your brand’s heart – its vision, mission & purpose.
Plus, you’ll want to get super clear on your ideal client (who you’re talking to).
And you need to know the problem you’re solving and how to strategically highlight this in line with your dream client’s emotions, thoughts, and feelings.
Oh, and then comes structure (are you writing for conversion?) And don’t forget to focus on developing a signature brand voice.
Yeah, copy is a lot of work. If you want to write your own wedding website content or copy, these are the things you’ll need to do, plus educating yourself on all the fun fundamentals of copy— I say fun because writing copy is fun, but it’s also hard work!
Ask yourself if you’re willing to do this work, and if you’re not, it might be time to start searching for a professional wedding copywriter for the task.
Have you considered your budget? How much are you willing to pay for wedding copywriting?
Paying for professional wedding copywriting isn’t the cheapest option. Due to the time, research, and ROI of copywriting, working with a copywriter can mean paying a premium.
Before reaching out to a copywriter, consider your budget and start researching price points. Some copywriters can cost upwards of $10K while others are £1-5k. Either way, you’ll be paying £2k+ for a well-written, strategic copy for your wedding business.
Alternative options could be to purchase a copywriting class and teach yourself or try DIY through YouTube videos and blog posts (a longer but more wallet-friendly alternative).

How much time do you have to dedicate to writing/hiring for your copy?
If you’re opting for one of the DIY methods outlined above, you need to make sure you’re dedicating time to this process.
For many wedding business owners, xopy falls to the bottom of the pile. It’s not until their website designer tells them they need their copy next week that panic starts to set in. Or worse, when they’ve already invested thousands into a website design that isn’t converting (yeah, poorly written website copy will do that to you!)
Depending on whether you’re outsourcing or writing your copy yourself, you’ll need to assign a certain amount of time to this project.
Working with a wedding copywriter: every wedding copywriting business will have its process. I require around 5 hours from my client in total. This is split into a 3-hour strategy session, a 1-hour copy walk-through and editing call, and around 1-hour for onboarding documents and email correspondence.
If you’re concerned about time, you can discuss the process and time frame with your copywriter.
Those DIY-ing their copy will also have varying time frames. If you’re completing a copywriting course, consider how long this is likely to take. And establish how much time you’ll need for the writing and research phase.
Do you want to learn the methods & strategies necessary for wedding copywriting?
The most important thing to consider when debating whether working with a wedding copywriting business is right for you is if you want to write your own copy.
If the thought of writing your copy makes you want to run away, delegate, or cry out for help, don’t waste your time and energy! Stay focused on your creative skillset, and hire someone else to write your website wording.
As I’m sure you know, embarking on a task you don’t want to do will slow the process, cause unnecessary stress, and lead to bad results.
Save yourself the anguish and hire a wedding copywriter for the task— you’ll even save money in the long run because you’ll remain focused on elevating your client experience and honing your craft in other areas of the business.
